Yoga practice plateau
YogaLondon Staff on 03 December, 2009 |
Anyone who's been practicing yoga for a while will know the feeling. When you began classes you were full of wonder and awe, and loved the calm feeling when you left class. As you continued to practice yoga your body adapted and adjusted and quickly, and you enjoyed the fast progress you were making. But now you've reached that slow patch. No matter how regular your practice or how much effort you put in, you just can see any change in what you do.
This plateau effect happens in most physical training. If you look at running, weight lifting or even diets, there comes the point where everything seems to grind to a halt. It takes a change in the training regime or an extra burst of effort to pass this plateau and move on to new heights. Unfortunately this is the time when most people get disheartened and choose to throw in the towel instead.
A good way to keep your motivation up at this time is to choose one to one yoga classes. A private yoga instructor will give you guidance to really get those fundamental poses under your belt, and rocket your practice forwards. With a good grasp of the technique behind the yoga positions/asana you'll be less likely to injure yourself and more likely to progress to more difficult poses at a faster rate. It's also harder to give up when you have your teacher knocking on your door!
